ADVENT/CHRISTMAS/EPIPHANY:

Here we see the light of God coming into the darkness of the world. The light comes down from heaven and touches the earth at Bethlehem. Notice the location of the star near the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. This scene is inspired by the anticipation we hear of the coming of the Messiah in the Old Testament, and the message of John chapter 1. The image also reminds us of “the beginning” when God created the heavens and the earth, waters and land, darkness and light.

LENT:

The barren tree is often a symbol of the Season of Lent in The Church. This image can reveal much, for during Lent we begin by hearing the words on Ash Wednesday that “You are dust and to dust you shall return.” As we hear the stories of Lent we discover that Jesus exposes the sins and shortcomings of all whom he encounters. In Mark 4:22 we read, “Everything that is hidden will be brought into the light. Everything that is a secret will be made known.” The barren tree has lost its leaves, is exposed and vulnerable. Most of its fruit has fallen, and that which remains is withering. Our lives follow this same pattern. But, this image also provides hope in that this world is not all there is. This world is not the end. Notice, there are some leaves still on the tree on its left side, and there are bits of spring green leaves indicating Spring is near. Hope is near.

HOLY WEEK/THE WEEK OF THE PASSION:

The stories of Holy Week, the Passion of Christ, are depicted. Palm leaves and a donkey remind us of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. A trail of silver coins fall from top center to the shared dipping of bread in oil between Jesus and Judas Iscariot on the night of betrayal. The bread and wine along with the basin and towel with a foot dipping in the water tell of the events of The Last Supper on Maundy Thursday where Jesus gives his commandment, “Just as I have loved you, love one another.” Surrounding the meal are vines and grapes, a sign of the kingdom of God and God’s abundant provisions. On the middle left side is the Garden of Gethsemane where the soldiers are coming for Jesus as his disciples are sleeping at the base of a tree. Beneath this is the rooster that is crowing as Peter denies Jesus in the courtyard as he is going to trial. Central is Jesus dying on the cross for the sins of the world, with the nails and closed tomb to the right.

EASTER / RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD:

On Sunday morning, the first day of the week (i.e. “the eighth day”), the women come to the tomb where Jesus was buried. Upon arrival, they discover that the stone has been rolled away are told that Jesus is no longer here but has risen. They run in fear and excitement to tell the people of the village.

SEASON AFTER PENTECOST:

The long Season of Pentecost extends for nearly one-half of the Church Year. The liturgical color is green, representing the color of growth and life. During this part of the Church Year we hear stories of the birth, life and growth of The Christian Church from Jerusalem to the world. Notice the green plant growing upward with roots and seeds extending downward, indicating more growth to come. Also notice the heads of wheat ready for harvest as this is part of the rhythm of our lives and The Church. It is faith that God plants and gives root in the lives of people of all nations around the world. These people are moving outward, both into the world and towards the cross of Christ with the promised presence of the Holy Spirit in their midst, represented by the dove. The horizon depicts the silhouette of the merging of both urban and rural communities as the Gospel knows no bounds but is for all in all places of the world.
