Description
The stories of Holy Week, the Passion of Christ, are depicted. Palm leaves and a donkey remind us of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. A trail of silver coins fall from top center to the shared dipping of bread in oil between Jesus and Judas Iscariot on the night of betrayal. The bread and wine along with the basin and towel with a foot dipping in the water tell of the events of The Last Supper on Maundy Thursday where Jesus gives his commandment, “Just as I have loved you, love one another.” Surrounding the meal are vines and grapes, a sign of the kingdom of God and God’s abundant provisions. On the middle left side is the Garden of Gethsemane where the soldiers are coming for Jesus as his disciples are sleeping at the base of a tree. Beneath this is the rooster that is crowing as Peter denies Jesus in the courtyard as he is going to trial. Central is Jesus dying on the cross for the sins of the world, with the nails and closed tomb to the right.
