Description
The barren tree is often a symbol of the Season of Lent in The Church. This image can reveal much, for during Lent we begin by hearing the words on Ash Wednesday that “You are dust and to dust you shall return.” As we hear the stories of Lent we discover that Jesus exposes the sins and shortcomings of all whom he encounters. In Mark 4:22 we read, “Everything that is hidden will be brought into the light. Everything that is a secret will be made known.” The barren tree has lost its leaves, is exposed and vulnerable. Most of its fruit has fallen, and that which remains is withering.
Our lives follow this same pattern. But, this image also provides hope in that this world is not all there is. This world is not the end. Notice, there are some leaves still on the tree on its left side, and there are bits of spring green leaves indicating Spring is near. Hope is near.
